The Associated Press news agency is reporting an unprecedented breach, accusing the US government of wiretapping. The US government appears to have been monitoring 20 phone lines belonging to the news agency, which was informed of the matter in a letter from the Justice Department.
The Associated Press reported that the department received lists of calls made from personal and business phone numbers of individual reporters at the agency, from numbers at the AP bureaus in New York, Washington and Hartford, as well as from the number used by reporters in the House of Representatives.
The data related to the calls covers a two-month period and the letter does not state the reason for spying on the agency's activities.
In a letter to the Ministry of Justice, the agency spoke of a violation of fundamental rights and demanded the return of the phone call records and the destruction of any copies.
