Why it's dangerous to visit porn sites incognito

Recently we mentioned the reason you should log out of Facebook while surfing porn sites so you are not tracked. Continuing the research a little further, we present another fact. Surfing porn sites via incognito browsing does not guarantee privacy.

It is a fact that incognito browsing does not save to history, but that is the only protection it provides you. 99 out of 100 Google Chrome users use incognito browsing on sites of this content.

Why surfing incognito is not private?

By opening an incognito browser – whether in Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, Microsoft Edge, and Internet Explorer – you are only ensuring that your computer does not remember your activity. As mentioned above, any web browser will ensure that your web searches are not visible the next time you log in.

However, this does not mean that incognito surfing is private or anonymous. Your anonymous browsing is stored by your ISP, your company and ultimately your browser's company. Your Internet service provider – or ISP – is able to monitor every website and search conducted from your home.

Try opening your bank account or your email website in incognito mode. You will notice that details such as the username and password are present even though incognito mode does not store your data.

Google has previously warned about surfing in Chrome's incognito mode. “By browsing incognito you do not hide your browsing from your employer, your Internet service provider or the sites you visit.” In reality, when you log into your Gmail account in incognito mode you make it easier for Google to track searches on porn sites.

If you have not disabled or paused the Web History of your Google account – you are able to log in and monitor your activity there as well.

Most browsers do the same thing with Google.

Some porn sites also use something called Super Cookies which are able to track your movements across the web, even when you are browsing in private mode. Super cookies are like regular cookies, a lightweight piece of software that sits on a website and “records” users who have visited the page. When you return to that page at a later date, the website is able to track all of your activity between the two visits.

Taking into account the above information, it is not wise to think that incognito mode is either private or anonymous. If you really want it to be anonymous, use a VPN but do not assume that your incognito browsing files are private
