If we talk about stereotypes in the programming world, you have probably heard phrases like ” nobody likes writing Java code “, ” C ++ is for the elderly ” and many more. To analyze the truth behind these stereotypes, the experts of Τrestle Technology created a tool.
You may have heard of Microsoft Project Oxford, whose Face APIs can detect a face in an image and determine whether that face is smiling, its gender, and age, as well as the facial hair percentage.

The data engineers have combined the Face API with the data that emerges from the trending pages of GitHub. This page displays the log files in a specific language that is popular at that moment. You can also view profile pictures of the most productive committers of these projects. Thus, this tool is able to fetch images of some of the busiest contributors for any given language.
While the dataset being used is small, it provides some entertaining results. The team does not forget to mention the following:
"It should be noted that this is highly unscientific. Who knows how accurate the Face API is or how accurately a user's GitHub profile picture reflects every aspect of their personality/identity. It's also unclear whether the most productive committers accurately represent a community."

It is proven that Java developers are the youngest and C ++ developers are older in age.
Gender of programmers:
If we talk about the gender of developers who contribute to top projects, this is a sad picture.

It is time to accept the fact that a programmer's job can be truly stressful. Perhaps this is the reason why some programmers haven't even managed to smile for their profile pictures on GitHub.
Facial hair of programmers:
This test had the most interesting results. It seems that Swift Developers are bearded hipsters, who mainly use Python, Perl, and JavaScript. This test was not normalized for gender. 🙂
