The global financial system is threatened by hackers!

The hackers aimed to steal a total of 951 million using illegal transactions. Just recently, evidence revealed that the poor, bad security (Internet routers costing $10) gave them access to the entire bank infrastructure, including the SWIFT servers responsible for financial transactions.

A new report showed that hackers also breached SWIFT, the backbone of the global financial system! The global financial network SWIFT is used by banks to transfer billions of dollars daily.

According to Reuters, the criminals had a very clever plan. They found a way to manipulate the SWIFT software used by the Bank of Bangladesh not only to remove the history of illegal transactions and modify the balances in the databases but also to prevent them from being printed in the SWIFT room where all transactions are recorded. The malicious software could even monitor and destroy incoming messages that confirmed the transactions made by the hackers.

In this way, the criminals hoped that their transactions would remain unnoticed until the money laundering took place. However, a spelling mistake made the banks realize that something was not right and they notified the Bank of Bangladesh and prevented the hackers from escaping with almost a billion in their hands.

Of the 81 million that were stolen, many are still circulating freely because the authorities have not found the perpetrators and have not recovered the money.

In the meantime, SWIFT confirmed to Reuters that it was aware of the malicious software that was used and would release a software update yesterday, Monday, to fix it. Also yesterday SWIFT warned its customers that, in its view, «a number of recent cyber‑incidents».
