24 years in prison for the creators of the SpyEye Virus

The masterminds behind the creation and spread of the notorious “SpyEye” botnet were sentenced to 24 years and 6 months in prison.

Aleksandr Andreevich Panin and Hamza Bendelladj were convicted of creating and distributing the SpyEye malware, which is estimated to have caused hundreds of millions of dollars in economic losses, according to a statement from the US Department of Justice.

SpyEye, the successor to the infamous Zeus banking malware, has been affectingfinancial institutions since 2009.
 
Once infected, the malware connects to command-and-control servers controlled by the attackers and steals the victim's personal and financial information, such as online banking credentials and credit card details using keyloggers and Web injection.
 
Panin, a 27-year-old Russian programmer known by the nicknames "Gribodemon" and "Harderman," was sentenced by the court to nine years, six months in prison for creating SpyEye, the successor to Zeus.
 
In 2010, Panin allegedly obtained the source code and rights to sell Zeus from Evginy Bogachev, also known as Slavik, and incorporated many elements of it into SpyEye. Bogachev, who is currently the FBI's most wanted hacker, remains at large.

's associate , Bendelladj, a 27-year-old Algerian, known by the aliases "BX1" and "Happy Hacker," who has hacked 217 banks and donated over $280 million to Palestinian charities, was sentenced to 15 years in prison for marketing and advertising the SpyEye malware on various online forums.

Bendelladj sold versions of SpyEye to nearly 150 customers at prices ranging from $1,000 to $8,500.

Bendelladj was arrested in Thailand in January 2013, while Panin was arrested in July 2013 at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
