The news came to light during a hearing in Washington, D.C., on the subject of the infamous Apple-FBI dispute. At the hearing, Apple's general counsel and senior vice president of legal and government affairs, Bruce Sewell, made the announcement in response to authorities who claim that the company was providing information to the Chinese government for business purposes.

Captain Charles Cohen of the Indiana State Police also claimed that Apple has been secretly cooperating with Beijing, but when spokeswoman Anna Eshoo asked him to cite his source, he could only cite news reports.

Apple testified, as did the FBI, about encryption and the company's refusal to weaken iPhone security to allow authorities to gain access. The controversy erupted over the iPhone of San Bernardino shooter Syed Farook, who killed 14 people in December 2015. The phone was locked and the FBI wanted access, so it issued a court order requiring Apple to create a special code so the FBI could access the phone's information.

The company denied the claim, claiming that in the wrong hands the tool could compromise the security and privacy of its customers. The FBI eventually managed to unlock the iPhone with the help of grey hat hackers, but it seems the encryption controversy is not over yet as the Department of Justice is seeking the company's help in another case.
