Students from the Technical University of Munich used their skills to help us understand the chances of death for each Game of Thrones character.
Their project, called “A Song of Ice and Data,” analyzes as much online data as it can find about both the books and the TV series, and is regularly updated from the Wiki of Ice and Fire, the Game of Thrones Wiki, Wikipedia, and Twitter. The algorithm categorized each character based on more than 20 characteristics such as age, gender, number of deceased relatives, and popularity, which was based on incoming and outgoing links to the Wiki of Ice and Fire.
There are 2,028 characters in the Game of Thrones universe, typically with more than 30 characters in each episode of the TV show, and the number of male characters is twice that of females.

Men are more likely to play aristocratic characters than women, but they are also more likely to be killed. The Munich team, which developed a machine-learning algorithm to predict the probability of characters dying, found that this probability is 33% for men and 23% for women. They extended the analysis to the age of the characters who were killed, and found that they were most likely to die between the ages of 31 and 40.
