Somewhere online right now, there's a digital Batman protecting your cyber security! An anonymous security researcher is believed to have hacked the hackers and is using one of the internet's biggest crime engines, Dridex, for a good cause!
And just as Gotham City supports Batman, the Cybersecurity community is demanding justice from the researcher.
The Dridex banking botnet is one of the largest and most ruthless tools used by cybercriminals. It is a vast network of computers that have been hacked and used to launch phishing attacks, install malware, and send spam emails. It has stolen at least $29 million from Internet users around the world in recent years by stealing their banking credentials.
But now part of Dridex has been compromised and is being used to distribute an updated version of Avira antivirus to clean infected computers.
Avira has denied any responsibility for this and believes it is the work of a white hat researcher who is tired of playing defense. It is certainly not the first time that someone who works as a security researcher by day, puts on his cyber “cape” at night and intervenes somewhere as a grey hat hacker.

Grey hat hackers are in between black hat and white hat. And this type has a long tradition for example the first computer virus was destroyed by a grey hat. So we can say that this type of action is as old as computer viruses.
The most recent example before Dridex is the ongoing cyberwar between Anonymous and ISIS. An offshoot of Anonymous, Ghost Sec has spent over a year monitoring ISIS social media activity not only to uncover the identities of its members but also to stop terrorist acts before they happen by providing authorities with information.
