Shodan is often described as «the most terrifying search engine in the world» or as the hackers' search engine. It was created by John Matherly, who named his project by borrowing the name of a ‘bad computer’ from the video game System Shock. Every six months, it publishes a list of the 10 most active Hacking Groups worldwide, concerning website breaches.
The latest TOR 10 of the most efficient hacking groups was made public a few days ago and includes ‘GHoST61’, a Turkish hacking group, in the top position. This relatively unknown group has been at the top of the list again after contesting the top spot the two previous times.

If we look at the list from previous years, we will notice only 4 well‑known names in this year’s catalog – r00t-x (fell down 1 position), TechnicaL (fell down 2 positions) and irus3033 (fell down 2 positions).
Most of the attacks by these groups are opportunistic, which means that the hackers just found the websites unprotected, left defacement messages behind them and moved on to larger targets.
If we look at the list of TOR targets of website defacers, the Ecommerce servers remain in the top position. Godaddy and Unified Layer follow.

The new entries in the list are CyrusOne, iServer Hosting, SoftLayer, New Dream Network and Digital Ocean.
Regarding the underlying server technology, Apache Web is the most compromised with 1,584 defaced websites. Followed by nginx with 222 and Microsoft ISS with 111 incidents. Here is the full list:
