There's no denying that selfies are the ultimate fashion trend of the moment, but there's a long way to go between them becoming your next passport. Hmmm, not so long after all...
A new passport in card format, which will include... a selfie photo of you, will soon be available in Europe, as we read in a news story that, no, is not from "Koulouri" or "The Onion".
The "modern" passport with selfie will be available initially in Ireland from July and will allow its holders to travel within the European Union, as announced by the country's Minister for Foreign Affairs, Charlie Flanagan.
It will be available to all Irish citizens over 18 years of age who hold a passport from the country, allowing them to fly to the 28 European Union countries, as well as Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein, leaving their passport booklet at home.
Applications for the new passport will be made online or via a mobile app and will cost 35 euros, while the accompanying selfies will of course have to comply with international standards for passport photos (so forget about Kim Kardashian poses or belfies). As for the duration of the new passport card, it will be valid for a maximum of five years (or until the expiration of the holder's regular passport).
So, new trends in passports too, and we wait to see if the rest of Europe will follow Ireland's example.
