Patients at Barry University Foot and Ankle Institute in Florida have been notified of a security breach that may have compromised their personal and medical information.
The security breach was discovered on May 14, according to the Miami Herald. The laptop was infected with a piece of malware.
The university hired a digital forensics firm to investigate the case. The firm removed the malware from the university's network and restored the files to their original state.
After several months, the University admitted that some sensitive patient information had been exposed by the breach, but has not announced the number of those affected.
The sensitive information exposed included names, social security numbers, dates of birth, credit and debit card numbers, driver's license numbers, and medical records.
The University is offering a complimentary 12-month credit monitoring service to those affected by this security breach.
