Searching Yahoo for “Google Chrome Download” may infect your computer

Searching-for-Google-Chrome-Download-on-YahooIn theory , the paid links and advertisements of major search engines should lead to safe websites. However, in practice, this does not always happen.

Researchers from ThreatTrack Security have found that users searching for “google chrome download” on Yahoo! may end up with a nasty malware infection .This is because some of the ads lead to a website called softpack(dot)info/chrome.

The «free software website» encourages users to install applications via its own software, WeDownload Manager.

This practice is not uncommon for websites offering free software downloads. However, the programs are usually bundled with adware. In this case, the Google Chrome installer offered on the website is a version of the notorious Sirefef/ZeroAccess malware

When executed, the program deletes itself and installs Adobe Flash Player. In the background, however, it begins to infect the victim's computer. Once installed, the malicious software disables Windows security settings to allow cybercriminals to «download» and other threats.

If you want to download software, refer to reputable websites. Try to avoid sites that ask you to download software through third‑party installers.
