The founder of email service Lavabit is raising donations to fund his legal battle with the US government. Ladar Levison was forced to shut down the service after facing unbearable pressure from the US government.
As it was revealed, Ladar refused to hand over to the US data related to Snowden, as well as the SSL key to decrypt his communications, which could have exposed the entire database of the service's users.
“I was forced to close Lavabit because I refuse to be complicit in crimes against the American people and the US Constitution. I wish I could share more with you about this situation,” Levison says in his message, asking for help from his fellow human beings.
“Defending the constitution is expensive! Help us by making a donation to defend Lavabit,” he said.
The crowdfunding that has been launched for this purpose has so far exceeded the amount of $51,600 (€38,000).
