University of Patras: Discovery of “Eye Type” application to write on a tablet with your eyes!
The University of Patras has once again come into the news with the double distinction received by Evangelos Skodras, a doctoral candidate at the Wired Communication Laboratory of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Technology, for the development of the “EyeType” application for mobile or tablet (Android) which allows text to be written using only the gaze, through the monitoring and recording of eye movement.
This is a true innovation in the use of mobile devices to enable communication, mainly by people suffering from ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), LIS (Locked-In Syndrome) or quadriplegia and are unable to move anything but their eyes.
The international distinctions came from the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) and EESTEC (European Society of Electrical Engineering Students) for the 2015 competitions.
Data from the EESTEC competition shows that the research app “Eye Type” won the innovation award among 51 other Android apps submitted by 717 researchers from 54 countries around the world.
