In order to build its mapping service, Apple acquired Coherent Navigation, which specializes in building GPS devices and applications.
Apple's maps have several problems and users don't use them since Google's corresponding application is much better and of course more popular.
Seeing this, Apple is making efforts to improve its service and for this reason it acquired Coherent Navigation with the aim of integrating its technology into its mapping application.
Another reason why Apple announced the acquisition of Coherent Navigation now is the fact that the developer conference (WWDC) is taking place in early June, at which it is possible that we will see the presentation of new features in its map service.
