The Cybercrime Prosecution warns of online scams

The Hellenic Police's Cybercrime Prosecution Directorate informs citizens, as well as companies and businesses, about two malicious behaviors that are committed with great frequency via the internet

The first case concerns the dissemination of malicious software, such as "Crypto-Locker", which spreads - is transmitted mainly through "infected" e-mail messages, but also through "unsafe" websites.

The malware aims to demand payment of a ransom in order to unlock and decrypt digital files and data stored on the infected computer. It can also affect all versions of the Windows operating system. Users are advised to be particularly careful and take digital protection and security measures to avoid being infected by the aforementioned malware, specifically:

  • Citizens who receive e-mails from unknown senders or of unknown origin should not "open" the links and not "download" the attached files contained therein, for which they do not know with certainty either the sender or the content of the attached file,
  • type the web page addresses (URLs) directly into the browser and do not use the suggested hyperlinks,
  • use genuine software programs and update them regularly, while the computer's antivirus program should always be up-to-date,
  • to check and always keep their operating system version up to date and
  • to create daily backups of their device files, on an external storage medium, so that in the event of an "attack" by malicious software, it is possible to restore their files.

Software "locks" digital files

The second case concerns fraud cases against companies and businesses based in our country and operating commercially, both in Greece and abroad, with fraudulent routing of payments to bank accounts of third parties and not of the actual beneficiaries.

In particular, third parties electronically penetrate (Cracking) the e-mails of commercial companies and intercept their electronic correspondence, aiming to identify electronic commercial transactions.

Then, after stealing the details of the commercial transactions, they inform, through fraudulent e-mails, the company that is about to transfer a sum of money due to a bank account of a collaborating company, that the money must be deposited into a different account than the one that was previously transacted, due to a change.

The result is that the company to which the money is owed and for which the bank transfer was made, never receives the amount of money.

In order to secure their digital data, as well as protect their banking transactions, commercial companies are urged to pay closer attention to payment processes made through Banking Institutions and to adhere to the following procedures:

  • to constantly verify the correct email address of the companies - businesses with which communication is made for upcoming transactions,
  • in case money is required to be sent in any way, they should verify the sending details in another way, other than email (telephone, online chat, etc.),
  • verify transactions directly with the banking institutions to which the money is to be transferred,
  • to maintain a second or additional security code when managing email accounts that receive - send sensitive or banking data,
  • to constantly update the protection and security programs of information systems and finally
  • The competent officials should be particularly careful in payment procedures through Banking Institutions.
