A court in Vienna, Austria, has set April 9, 2015, as the date to consider whether the trial of the largest collective user action in Europe against Facebook, for violating European data privacy law, has a legal basis.
Facebook , Inc.claims it cannot be sued by users of its service. The lawsuit concerns its privacy policy, refers to the illegal collection and forwarding of user data, the tracking of users (from Likes or apps) and its participation in the PRISM program by the NSA.
The collective appeal “europe vs Facebook” has been signed by 25,000 users from various countries (not from Greece). In addition, 50,000 users have expressed their intention to participate in the appeal in the future, from the page fbclaim.com.
The plaintiffs are demanding that the company stop what they claim is illegal use of their personal data and are seeking compensation of 500 euros per person. They acknowledge, however, that this will be the least of the problems the company will face, given that the court could declare the company's controversial practices illegal under European law, and they express confidence that they will win the trial.
