The rights of the Prime Minister and ministers of the Turkish government in relation to the Internet and freedom of expression.
According to an article added to a bill submitted to Parliament, in... the next few days, members of the government will be able to block websites within... four hours!
The article was added to a bill concerning foundations and associations and allows the prime minister and members of the cabinet to have the ability to intervene and remove the content of websites within four hours and without a prior court decision.
The Prime Minister and ministers will be able to do this when they judge that the content of certain websites endangers national security, public health, public order, or human life and property.
The Telecommunications Directorate (TIB) in Turkey is the one that will block "dangerous" websites and remove the relevant content from the internet immediately upon request from the prime minister or his ministers.
On September 10, 2014, a similar law was passed in the Turkish parliament, giving TIB the right to intervene in the internet, provoking the anger of thousands of users. At that time, the opposition (Republican People's Party) had gone to court to repeal the law.
On October 2, 2014, the Constitutional Court declared the relevant law unconstitutional and ordered its repeal.
