The Turkish government is threatening to pull the trigger on Twitter once again, asking the company to block the account of a left-wing newspaper, "BirGun", which published military documents!
According to a report, Turkish secret service trucks were transporting weapons to Syria, a case for which a Turkish court issued a ban on all media outlets, clearly implying social media, where the documents in question could be published.
As the court claimed, the publication of such information constitutes a violation of national security and interference in national affairs, while the Turkish government denied that the trucks contained weapons and claimed that they were humanitarian aid for the Turkmen minority, who have been trapped in Syria amid hostilities since 2011.
Despite the court ruling, "BirGun", as well as other Turkish Twitter, posted about the controversial issue, prompting the Erdogan government to ask the company to block the accounts in question.
"Among approximately 60,000 tweets on the subject, the company allowed only a small number to be published, mainly messages related to national security and order. We continue to work to protect the rights of our users and maintain access to Twitter for millions of people in Turkey," a company spokesperson said.
We recall that both Twitter and YouTube were blocked last March, following leaks about a "secret" plan for Turkish military operations in Syria. Twitter was restored after two weeks, while YouTube was restored two months later.
