The systems of the Swiss bank, Banque Cantonale de Geneve (BCGE), have been breached by hackers known as Rex Mundi and customer data is in their hands.
The hackers are demanding a ransom of 10,000 euros ($11,853) in order to keep the data they have in their possession private, while also providing them with some information to confirm the fact. So far, the bank has not taken any action.
The hackers did not breach the bank's internal security system but a public server, through an SQL attack, that contained a database with sensitive customer data.
As for the stolen data, the list includes names, addresses, phone numbers, account numbers, as well as email communications between customers and the financial institution.
Rex Mundi says it has not breached bank accounts, but is in possession of 30,192 private emails containing sensitive customer data.
The hackers, via a post on Twitter, warn the bank that they will publish the data if their demand is not met. This is not the first time that the hacker group has blackmailed and demanded ransom, other organizations have fallen victim to the group.
