CitizenFour – Documentary about Edward Snowden nominated for an Oscar

Laura Poitras' documentary about Edward Snowden, CitizenFour, reaches the "red carpet" of the 2015 Oscars, as it is nominated in the "Best Documentary" category.

Edward-Snowden- CitizenFour

It all started in January 2013, when Poitras was preparing a film about the surveillance of citizens and the “abuses of power” by the US national security in the period after “September 11”. It was then that she began to receive encrypted messages from someone who introduced herself to her as CitizenFour and was ready to make revelations about the mass surveillance of the NSA and the country’s intelligence services. It was, of course, Edward Snowden and… the rest is a story that most of you know and that we have developed, of course, in recent years and in many issues of digitallife.gr.

The documentary “CitizenFour” starts from the “electronic” meeting of Snowden with Poitras, while developing her personal perspective, which arose from the unique opportunity she had, together with journalist Glenn Greenward, to spend eight full days with Edward Snowden in Hong Kong, and to have full access to the NSA file he leaked. She had her camera with her and for the first time we see unpublished material from their meetings. A material that does not rest so much on the events and revelations themselves, which we already know, but on how Snowden handled the first “critical” days of his escape, as well as the pending issues he left from his previous life.

Laura Poitras, we should note that she was awarded together with the Guardian and the Washington Post with a Pulitzer for the related publications of the Snowden case.

The CitizenFour, nominee for the Oscar for Best Documentary, could even be considered a favorite in its category, having co-nominated “The Salt of Earth” (a biographical documentary about photographer Sebastiao Salgado), “Finding Vivian Maier” (for the stunning street photographs of a nanny that were discovered after her death), “Last Days in Vietnam” (refers to the chaos in Saigon after the Americans left at the end of the Vietnam War) and “Virunga” (a Netflix production about a national park in the Congo).

Watch the official trailer for “CitizenFour” which was released in October 2014 and has gathered 21 awards and 14 award nominations so far.
