An online ghetto is developing between Islamist and pro-Western hackers. Anonymous launched #OpCharlieHebdo a few days ago in response to the terrorist attacks in Paris.
Western activists are currently trying to wipe out Muslim accounts from Twitter, as well as take down websites related to terrorism.
The anons claim their first success with a strike against the website ansar-alhaqq.net, a French-language Jihad forum.
In response, Islamist hackers have managed to deface several French websites. A group calling itself United Islamic Cyber Force has mocked Anonymous in various defacements and is calling on other Muslim hackers to join the hacking campaign “OpFrance.”
The United Islamic Cyber Force (uicforce) group and others like it, such as the more organized FallaGa group, formed in 2013, have achieved significant hits on French websites.
One notable victim is the website of the open source Notepad++ application, which angered Muslim malicious users by releasing a version of its software that said: “Je suis Charlie.” The website was quickly restored, but the incident leaves us with many questions as to whether mentioning a Je Suis Charlie does not insult the Islamic prophet. Perhaps we have reached an age where freedom of speech is not a right.
Defacements are usually the online equivalent of vandalism, as the goal is to completely destroy the website. Of course, such an attack can be much more serious if hackers “plant” malware on the compromised website.
