700 million users on Facebook's WhatsApp

WhatsApp

WhatsApp mostpopular messaging apps worldwide, continues to grow in popularity.

The company, which owns the app, which users around the world use to send messages for free, says 700 million users use the app each month, up from 600 million in August. Users send 30 billion messages a day, the company's CEO, Jan Koum, said in a Facebook.

That makes it one of the world's largest social networks, bigger than Twitter, with 284 million, or even similar site Instagram, which had 300 million users last month. Facebook, however, is still the largest, with 1.3 billion monthly users.

“We are grateful that so many of you are using our service to stay in touch with your friends and family, business colleagues and classmates,” says Koum.

The latest figures could help Facebook calm investor fears about the company's strategy, despite its $19 billion purchase price, one of the largest in Silicon Valley history.

A WhatsApp spokesperson declined to say how many users are paying for the subscription service, or whether the service's growth has met expectations of the partnership with Facebook.

For WhatsApp's part, Koum vowed to continue improving the app. Late last year, the app added encryption for messages sent between its millions of Android users. With this feature, the service now scrambles data to make it harder for hackers to intercept.
