With Christmas fast approaching, online scammers are coming up with new ways to lure in unsuspecting consumers with branded products such as Samsung. One of the latest cases is the report that Argos and Tesco are giving away a large number of Samsung's 4K Ultra HD TVs.
The message states that 250 televisions will be given away, which makes the bait even more attractive, as it implies that the victim actually has the opportunity to get such a television.
Scammers try to make a page as popular as possible in order to sell it. Furthermore, entering the draw does not require too much effort from the user: all they have to do is share the message, leave a comment and show their support for the campaign by liking the “official” page.
The OTA says this is a “cybercriminal” attempt to make a page popular enough to sell for a large sum of money. This type of activity is called “like-farming,” because the scammers convince users to increase the number of likes.
The fake post was available in two places on Facebook, but one of the pages has already been taken down. The other is still active and has amassed over 13,000 likes.
The giveaway ad message has nearly 11,000 comments, 32,000 likes, and has been shared more than 53,000 times. And there are more than one Facebookfor this scam, with numbers that are almost double those above.
Users should check out an offer or campaign that sounds very appealing on the organisers' official Facebook pages, such as Tesco and Argos in this case.
