Renowned physicist Stephen Hawking has warned that humanity's efforts to create computers and robots with advanced artificial intelligence pose a serious existential threat to itself, making the risk of the human species disappearing at some point very real.
He is not the first scientist to express similar concerns, but his opinion is certainly particularly weighty. As he emphatically told the BBC, “the full development of artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human species.”
As he mentioned, the simple forms of artificial intelligence that have been created so far have proven to be very useful, but he expressed his fear of the consequences that may arise if artificial intelligence creates something that surpasses human capabilities.
"It would command itself and redesign itself at an ever-increasing speed. Humans, limited by slow biological evolution, would not be able to compete with it and would be left behind," he said.
Experts and non-experts alike are divided on the issue. Many are more optimistic and less cautious, but others share Hawking, such as Elon Musk, creator of the private space company SpaceX, who a few days ago, on the same wavelength, warned that "artificial intelligence constitutes the greatest existential threat to humanity."
