Project Ara has reached a significant milestone.
A new video shows the most advanced prototype of a modular smartphone, which actually works and is able to launch an app.
Project Ara is Google's ambitious plan for modular smartphones with interchangeable parts. The idea is to create a phone whose individual components, such as the processor, screen or camera, can be swapped out individually so that users have more ways to customize their devices at a lower cost.
The latest prototype, called Spiral One, is the most functional Ara prototype yet. In the demo video, the Android device powers up, the screen unlocks, and an app launches.
