Since the release of Back to the Future, the hoverboard has been one of the most coveted tech gadgets we haven't been able to build, at least until recently. Arx Pax is a KickStarter-funded company, and the Hendo Hoverboard seems to be aiming for more uses than just getting around, like keeping priceless artifacts safe from earthquakes and transporting items to warehouses.
To hover, the floor must be metal, as the hoverboard creates a magnetic field that allows it to lift off the ground. So far, the developers kit can lift up to 18 kg, while the Hendo Board can lift up to 136 kg, and will soon reach 226 kg.
So far there is a very basic problem. There is no way to control its direction, as it follows the direction of the momentum our body has when we climb on it.
It is currently impossible to see it circulating outside, but it could certainly be integrated into entertainment venues to give the user the sensation of floating.
The couple who created the project hopes to release the first developers kit in 2015! It will be very interesting to see where this technology can be used.
