Asprox Botnet Spreads Through Emails Promising Starbucks Gift Cards

Asprox Botnet

Administrators of the Asprox network are spreading malicious emails promising gift cards for use at Starbucks stores.

The goal of the campaign is to grow the botnet that distributes various malware. Asprox is also known by the name of Kuluoz and its main functionality is to spread massive amounts of spam.

The recent wave of malicious emails claim to be from AT&T and offer an eGift worth $20 (€16) that can be used at Starbucks stores for purchases.

The message appears to offer the option to print the gift card at a specific link. When the victim tries to download the card, the Asprox malware infects the computer, according to Hoax-Slayer.

By installing the file, cybercriminals are given the opportunity to have free access to the computer.

Asprox can be used for a variety of malicious actions, not just sending spam. It can deliver viruses specifically designed to steal financial information or credentials for different online accounts.

A botnet can also be used to infiltrate the network of certain businesses, deploying an attack from an infected system.
