Google announced that the large text file purporting to be a list of Google account usernames and passwords, which contains over 4.9 million items, is likely a collection of credentials from different sources, not from a breach of the company's systems.
The file was leaked to the Bitcoin Security board on Tuesday by a user with the nickname “tvskit,” who claimed that over 60% of the passwords worked, according to a translation of the content on Russian news site RT. However, in its own analysis, Google found that only 2% of the credentials are working and an even smaller number have been successfully used.
The company's security team said: "Our automated anti-hijacking systems would have blocked many of these login attempts. We have secured the affected accounts and have asked users to reset their passwords."
