Artificial intelligence in the US's next-generation fighters?

F35The US's next-generation fighter jets - expected to succeed the Navy's F/A-18 E/F Super Hornet and the Air Force's F/A-22 Raptor - will likely feature advanced artificial intelligence features, according to a report.

As reported to USNI News - the US Naval Institute's news and analysis portal - a US Navy official briefed on the Super Hornet replacement plans in 2030, there will be extensive use of artificial intelligence.

While there are significant differences in the Air Force's vision for its air superiority fighter (FX) and the Navy's vision for its own fighter (F/A-XX), there is agreement on some fundamental features. "I think we all agree that we need to work on PNT (Positioning, Navigation, Timing), communications and big data movement between the two services," the official said.

It is not yet clear how technology such as artificial intelligence (A.I.) would help a tactical fighter jet complete its mission - however, it is estimated that A.I. could function as an aid in decision-making, in a manner similar to that found in fighters such as the F-22 and F-35, with the unified way of using sensors.

An “innovation conference” called Air Superiority: 2030 and Beyond was held at Moffett Field, California, on August 27. The focus was on finding new ideas for achieving air superiority. Both the Navy and the Air Force, despite their differences, are looking to collaborate with Silicon Valley technology companies to address technological challenges in the field of sixth-generation fighter aircraft.
