Cryptolocker, after infiltrating victims' computers, encrypted their files and then demanded €400 to give them the “key” to regain access to them, within 72 hours, or they would lose them forever. Although a small percentage of victims eventually gave in and paid the ransom (1.3%), the profit was significant for Cryptolocker's creators.
