The organizers of the Syscan security conference, which will be held in Beijing next week, are offering a $10,000 prize to the hacker who manages to breach the Tesla Model S car system.
All those who have registered for the conference can participate in the competition, the terms and regulations of which will be announced very soon.
According to Forbes, the organizers are looking for specific types of attacks that could lead to control of the car via a computer or direct the user to specially crafted websites with malware, via the car's web browser.
The reason a Tesla model was chosen is that the company takes security seriously and has implemented a vulnerability disclosure program that has already helped eliminate the most obvious security flaws. Tesla, however, is not associated with the competition in any way.
Among the keynote speakers appearing at the conference will be Pk001, a researcher with significant experience in reverse engineering embedded automotive networks and systems.
The researcher's presentation focuses on methods that can be used to prevent a potential breach, by building a security system for the car network based on the Controller Area Network (CAN) protocol.
CAN is the most popular protocol in the automotive industry, which reduces the risk of an attacker tampering with the various functions of the car.
