Since June 20, 2014, Google has also started providing movie playback services in Greece - the service is provided in a total of 90 countries. Thus, the Greek Google Play has acquired a video library with movies from 20th Century Fox, Paramount, Sony, Universal and Warner Bros. Their movies are available for rental and purchase, in standard and high definition, with relevant labeling for the existence or not of Greek subtitles. Each movie on Google Play is accompanied by information about the quality in which it is available and can be viewed in normal resolution on the WWW. Purchases from Google Play are made with the so-called Google Wallet (i.e. by connecting to a credit/debit card). Other payment options , such as Google Play gift cards or via PayPal, are not available in Greece . The experience begins by downloading the "Google Play Movies & TV" application. This application is available for Android and iOS devices with Android software version 2.2 or iOS 6.0 and newer versions respectively. At least for now, however, movies purchased on Google Play cannot be saved to your computer or iOS device. Watching movies on TV can be done when your smartphone or tablet can be connected via HDMI or with Chromecast , which is not yet available in Greece.
The movies are grouped into categories according to their genre, Most Popular and New Releases. Also, the user can see movie lists based on the actor, or the director or with a free search.
You should also know that:
- The movie is stored on the device's internal storage and cannot be moved to an SD card or other external storage.
- However, you can save a purchased movie on up to five devices at the same time.
- To watch, you must be signed in to the Google Account you used to order the movie. You can't transfer movies or TV shows between accounts.
- TV shows are not available in Greece.
When it comes to rentals, there is no limit to the number of viewings you can have during the time period specified when renting. However, you will often be required to start the viewing within 30 days of the rental date and finish it within 48 hours of the viewing starting.
Note that you can cancel your rental - and receive a refund - if you have not watched it within 7 business days. Additionally, you retain the right to submit a refund request for another reason through the Google Play Help Center, but if this is submitted after 7 business days, Google reserves the right to reject it at its discretion.
To view a movie from Google Play, you must be connected to the Internet and signed in to your Google account. You should also make sure to authorize your device to play movies from Google Play while connected to the Internet so that you can watch the movie offline in the future. You can designate five devices for offline viewing and “play around” with the authorizations by removing viewing rights from one to give it to another, although there are some annoying limitations: you can only authorize the same device three times in any 12-month period and deauthorize the same device twice in any 12-month period, deauthorizing a total of 2 devices for offline playback every 90 days. Finally, you cannot authorize more than 3 Google Accounts on the same device.
You cannot watch the same movie on more than one device (either with an Internet connection or from an authorized offline device). This doesn't mean you can't watch different movies you've purchased, but there is a limit to their number, which is three "content streams."
The first caustic comments about the service concern the prices of the films. For example, the film “300: Rise of an Empire” is available for rent for €4.99 in HD, and for €3.99 in SD, and for purchase for €16.99 (HD), or €13.99 (SD). A quick inspection shows that the lowest rental price is €2.99. There are films that are not available for rent, but only for purchase. Finally, there is no possibility of viewing films with a monthly subscription.
Each film is accompanied by a rating (%), according to the judgment of the online service rotten tomatoes.
