The Cybercrime Prosecution Directorate informs citizens that it has recently been receiving complaints regarding the fraud of store owners, which sell, among other things, prepaid cards, such as "paysafe", for online purchases.
- PaySafe prepaid “cards” aresold at kiosks and convenience stores, gas stations and supermarkets. Their value can be 10, 25, 50 or 100 euros and to pay the user enters a 16-digit unique code that is written on the slip issued at the convenience store in the corresponding form on the cooperating online store. For larger purchases, more than one PaySafe “card” PIN can be combined.
In particular, the complaints of store owners (kiosks, convenience stores, etc.) concern cases in which unknown individuals have called them and, pretending to be either their regular customers or employees of companies with prepaid cards, have convinced them to issue prepaid cards and to inform them of the card code by phone.
In some of the cases, the perpetrators claim to be technicians of the company that has installed the prepaid card issuing machines in the stores and in order to verify their proper operation, they ask the owners to issue cards and give them the code, so that they can perform the supposedly necessary tests from the central system of the supplying company.
Subsequently, the store owners, after contacting the companies issuing the prepaid cards, finally find that they are used directly, mainly on online gambling or online shopping websites.
Citizens are asked, on the occasion of such incidents, to be particularly careful in their transactions, to avoid possible fraud. In particular, store owners should not issue prepaid cards over the phone, if they have not previously verified the identity of the person. They should also be careful in any case during the process of their transactions with customers.
