The security service of the President of the United States, the well-known Secret Service, is looking for a sarcasm detector that it intends to use to scan Twitter posts. In fact, the service did not hesitate to post the relevant announcement on the Internet, requesting software that will be able to analyze social media data. This software should, among other things, have the ability to recognize sarcasm and the so-called “false positives”. According to a report by the Washington Post, the press secretary of the service, Ed Donovan, stated that the goal of the service is to automate the process of monitoring social media. “This is real-time analysis.
The ability to recognize sarcasm is one of the many properties we want the software to have, one of the 16 or 18 things it should do.” The service’s announcement also mentions the goals of automating social media monitoring, while it appears that the software should be compatible with Internet Explorer 8, a browser that was released five years ago.
Of course, the agency does not say in the announcement what exactly it intends to do with the analysis of all this data, but apparently it is going to help "protect the economy, the nation's leaders and heads of state, and other government officials visiting the United States.".
