The Greek postal services company ACS AEE, a member of the Quest Group, announced the launch of the ACS SKYPACK air transport research program with small unmanned aerial vehicles, exploring the conditions and technologies that will allow the delivery of medicines and other sensitive high-priority items to inaccessible areas (mountainous or micro-islands), in short times.
According to a relevant announcement, with the existing innovative technology, it is possible to deliver objects of a specific weight/volume (up to approximately two kilograms) at a distance of up to a few kilometers (with flights and stops for charging/supplying the aerial vehicles through special stations, in analogy to the movement of calls in mobile telephony), without requiring the existence of a ground station. This technology is in an evolutionary stage, is being improved and is expected to transport greater weight and greater distances in the future.
Within the framework of this program, the objects to be transported will be placed in special packages marked ACS SKYPACK, which will then be transported via small unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) to their final destination. It is noted that, for the use of the new technology, a special framework of technical safety specifications and licensing is required from the Greek Authorities within the EU, which is not yet available. The company is closely monitoring developments in this field, adapting its program to evolving prospects.
