The Social Security numbers of nearly 30,000 students enrolled between 1995 and 2012 have been compromised after the Iowa State University network server was breached
The University says it has found no evidence that any of the students' financial information or that the attackers were able to gain access to any other records.
University representatives believe that the attackers who breached departmental servers were attempting to use their computing power to create virtual currencies, known as Bitcoins.
Even if personal information was not the intended target, the University urges students affected by the breach to monitor their financial reports.
Another 18,949 University students whose ID numbers were compromised were notified of the breach. However, this data has no use beyond their campus.
