Skype has announced that the telephony service will make group video calls free for all Windows/Mac users and Xbox Live Gold One subscribers.
Microsoft, which previously only offered the feature to Skype Premium subscribers, wants to compete with Google Hangouts, which has offered free group video calling since 2013 (before it was even integrated into the original Google+).
According to statements by Skype executive Phillip Snalune, free group video calls will be launched in the future on tablets and smartphones running Windows Phone, Android and iOS. In the future, the feature will also be integrated into the version of Skype for the "modern" Windows 8 environment.
