Hackers claim to have stolen data from 800 million cards – is it true?

Cybersecurity officials are still investigating the claim that a group of hackers managed to steal hundreds of millions of credit card accounts in the US.

The group, which calls itself Anonymous Ukraine, said last week it had seized information related to 800 million credit and debit card accounts in the United States, including cards belonging to President Obama and other politicians. The group said it wants to harm the U.S. economy.

Two companies investigating the breach – Risk Based Security and Battelle – say they are unable to verify that the 800 million accounts, including those of VIPs, have been breached. Also, the researchers note that many of the files the team has presented as evidence of the theft are incomplete, old, or fake.
