Twitter resets user passwords, possible account breach

Twitter-Resets-User-Passwords-Tells-Them-Their-Accounts-May-Have-Been-Hacked

A few hours ago, a large number of Twitter began receiving password reset notifications. However, it appears that the messages were sent in error, not due to a hacking attack.

Due to the large number of emails sent, many believed that the social networking site or some third-party service had been compromised.

The email states: "Twitter believes your account may have been compromised by a website or service unrelated to Twitter. We have reset your account password."

About a year ago, Twitter reset the passwords of 250,000 users after a suspected data breach. However, this time, the social media company says there was no hacking attack. Instead, the passwords were accidentally reset.

Twitter representatives told The Next Web: "We inadvertently sent some password reset notifications due to a system error. We apologize to users for the inconvenience."

While most of the users who have received the password reset notifications were not exposed, the incident has caused unnecessary panic.

On the other hand, some users' accounts could have actually been targeted by cybercriminals just like the emails that were sent. Now, because Twitter revealed that the reset was unintentional, many people may make the mistake and continue to use the same password.

If your password has been reset, change it. Even if it hasn't been compromised, we recommend changing your passwords regularly to secure your account.
