The mistake made by a Stockholm employment office, which called all registered unemployed people in the city to appear at the same time for a job interview, looks like a bad prank that caused chaos.
“Something went wrong with the electronic update list . . . and it created a very confusing situation in the service,” said Klas Olsson, the acting director at the employment office.
The email announcing the upcoming recruitments, instead of being sent to about 1,000 people, was sent to 61,000, almost all of Stockholm's unemployed, the capital's police said. Hundreds of people gathered on the street where the office is located, and as more and more people arrived, the queue stretched all the way down a central avenue in the city.
As the hours passed and office employees were unable to control the situation, tempers flared and the police were called to disperse the crowd who had begun to become enraged by the "mistake.".
“When we got here there were a lot of people and there was a lot of commotion,” said Police Inspector Ulf Lindgren.
Olsson told the Aftonbladet newspaper that he did not know whether it was human error or a technical problem.
Unemployment in Sweden rose to 8.6% in January.
