Mobile apps will save the Eurozone

By 2018, this technology will have contributed 5 million jobs and 63 billion euros

The technology applications market has the potential to contribute €63 billion and almost 5 million jobs to the EU economy by 2018, according to research commissioned by Brussels.

Today, the European web applications market employs 1.8 million people and the size will increase 167% to 4.8 million by 2018, according to research conducted by GIGAOM on behalf of the European Commission.

European buyers and advertisers paid €6.1 billion for apps in 2013 and the figure will rise to €18.7 billion in 2018, according to the research.

Combined with projected consumer spending, the research expects annual revenue of €63 million for the apps industry within 5 years, an increase of 260% from €17.5 billion today.

The apps sector will be the main driver of the European economy. It has already achieved some significant successes, with the 20 largest companies capturing 40% of the global market.
