The 46-year-old billionaire founder of eBay, Pierre Omidyar, is behind a new online publishing argument. He is creating the company First Look Media (in which he will invest about $250 million), which today launches its first site called The Intercept.
It is a dynamic site with “strong signatures”, which wants to go to the extreme in terms of revelations related to the leaks of Edward Snowden, about the US National Security Agency (NSA) – and not only that. As we read in the introductory note of “The Intercept”, the site will cover many industries and topics, as part of its mission to hold “the most powerful government and corporate groups accountable” implying that it will serve “independent journalism”.
Former Guardian journalist Glenn Greenwald, a key figure in the publication of the former NSA executive's revelations in the English-language media, is participating in The Intercept, along with a team of twelve, for now, which also includes the famous filmmaker Laura Poitras, as well as the journalist, researcher and author Jeremy Scahill. Greenwald himself has noted in the past that he and Poitras are the only two people in the world who have the complete files leaked by Edward Snowden, so his publications in The Intercept are awaited with particular interest.
In the first two issues published by the new site, however, we encounter two revealing reports. In one, Greenwald and Scahill sign an extremely interesting article according to which NSA surveillance programs have been used in the past to identify targets for American drones, while in another guest post, American artist Trevor Paglen publishes exclusive high-resolution photographs from NSA facilities and other intelligence agencies around the world.
