WhatsApp is working on “View-Once Text Messages”

WhatsApp is working on a new feature that will allow users to send text messages that can only be viewed once , similar to the feature already available for photos, videos, and voice messages. This new feature, known as “ WhatsApp View-Once Text Messages ,” is expected to offer greater security and privacy to users of the platform.

According to WABetaInfo, after typing a message in the chat bar, users will be able to select 'Send as view once' by long-pressing the Send button. Once the message is sent, the recipient will be able to open the message once and read it before it disappears. This process ensures that the content of the message remains private and cannot be reproduced or shared further.

This new feature comes at a time when security and data are at the forefront of global conversation. With growing concerns about privacy, users are looking for solutions that allow them to communicate securely without the risk of information being leaked. WhatsApp View-Once Text Messages offers just that, allowing users to send sensitive information without worrying about it being stored or replayed.

Additionally, WhatsApp will block screenshots and screen recordings to prevent content from being preserved in any form. This approach further enhances security, as it prevents any attempt by the recipient to record the message. Similar features have been adopted by other apps, such as Snapchat, which pioneered the concept of disappearing messages.

The feature, which is still in development, is expected to be available in individual conversations and groups, but will not be available in channels, where ephemeral messages are not appropriate. This means that users will be able to use the feature in personal and group conversations, but not in broader communication channels, where preserving messages may be necessary for archival or other reasons.

WhatsApp is also developing the phones Android, which suggests that the company is looking to bring this feature to as many users as possible. Developing for Android is important, given that the majority of users worldwide use devices with this operating system.

WhatsApp strengthens user security

WABetaInfo notes that the new feature will be welcomed by users who want it, and who are currently forced to add text to an image and send it (to ensure it disappears after the message). This practice, while effective, is not ideal, as it requires extra steps and does not offer the same ease of use as WhatsApp's disposable messages.

The option follows another feature that appeared in beta a few weeks ago, which causes messages to disappear based on a countdown that only starts after they have been read. This feature, although different in its functionality, highlights WhatsApp's ongoing effort to offer tools that enhance the privacy and security of communications.

The introduction of WhatsApp disposable messages is expected to change the way users perceive and use the platform to send sensitive information. With the growing need for secure and private communications, this new feature could be an important step towards protecting users' personal data.
