As a new report by the Washington Post reveals, the FBI has special software in its possession that is able to secretly activate the webcam of laptops remotely, without even turning on the indicator light.
According to Marcus Thomas, a former employee of the FBI's Operation Technology Division, this type of secret surveillance is only applied in investigations of very serious crimes or in cases of terrorism.
Most of the time, the FBI uses phishing techniques similar to those used by spammers to gain access to suspects' email and other accounts. But the feeling that even if it doesn't happen often, if someone wants to, they can activate your laptop's webcam is scary to say the least..
