WhatsApp users should be on the lookout for fake emails that try to trick them into opening an attachment. The messages are part of a campaign by cybercriminals, whose goal is to distribute a piece of malware.
Conrad Longmore from the Dynamoo blog reports that the emails have the title «Your friend just sent you a photo». In the content they say «Your friend just sent you a photo via WhatsApp. Open the attachment to view it.»
The messages do not contain anything related to WhatsApp. In fact, the file (IMG003299.exe) contains a piece of the Wauchos malware. At the moment, the threat is only detected by about nine antivirus programs.
This is not the only scam that tries to deceive internet users by exploiting the WhatsApp application, and of course it will not be the last, so we must be very careful.
