The LA Gay & Lesbian Center has warned 59,000 people whose personal and financial information may have been compromised by attackerswho gained unauthorized access to the organization's information systems between September 17 and November 8.
Experts investigating the incident say it was a complex attack that targeted sensitive information.
Information that attackers could have accessed includes names, contact information, payment card information, medical or healthcare information, dates of birth, social security numbers, health insurance account numbers.
The attackers relied on a piece of malware that attempts to steal information. The breach was discovered by one of the organization's employees.
Authorities have been called to investigate the incident. In the meantime, affected users are being offered a free year of Experian ProtectMyID.
