UK TikTok: Paying a subscription to remove ads

TikTok is preparing to launch an ad - free (paid) version for users in the United Kingdom . The new subscription will be available to users over 18 “in the coming months,” TikTok said in a statement. It will cost £3.99 (about $5.40) per month. In exchange, TikTok will remove ads from users’ feeds and promise not to use their data for unspecified “advertising purposes.”

This “pay or consent” model is likely a response to the UK’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and other privacy laws that prohibit companies from collecting users’ personal data for advertising purposes without their explicit consent. The subscription is optional , which means TikTok can argue that users have the choice to avoid targeted ads.

Meta implemented a similar approach for Facebook and Instagram users last year after the same subscription model was rejected by EU regulators.

TikTok states that users who do not sign up for the new subscription will continue to receive personalized ads and the basic platform experience will not change for paid or free users.

“Advertising on our platform already helps thousands of UK businesses reach new customers, increase sales and create jobs, while our new ad-free option gives people more control over their experience,” said TikTok UK director Kris Boger. “This ensures we continue to deliver real economic impact while giving our community the flexibility to engage with TikTok in the way that suits them.”

TikTok started testing the ad-free experience in 2023, so it took quite some time for it to officially launch.

TikTok without ads: Greater transparency and data protection

TikTok's move signals a broader shift in how major social media platforms operate, as pressure from regulators for greater transparency and privacy grows. The model of ad-free paid experiences shows how companies are seeking new balances between advertising revenue, regulatory compliance and users' demand for more control over their data.

If the venture proves successful in the UK, it is possible that we will see similar subscription options expand to other markets, gradually changing the “free in exchange for data” model. The question now is whether users are willing to pay for a cleaner and more private experience, or whether the majority will continue to choose free access with personalized ads.
