Shocking and moving is the first photo of 16-year-old Myrto from the hospital in Boston where she is being treated after the attack she suffered in the summer of 2012 on Paros.
The first photo of Myrto Papadomichelaki, who was attacked by Pakistani Ahmed Vakas on the Golden Beach of Paros on July 22, 2012, was "uploaded" on the website You Caring.com, where the "Friends of Myrto" have created a page where anyone who wishes can contribute financially.
The fundraising for the purchase of the machine is an initiative of the Youth of the Federation of Hellenic-American Associations of New England
Myrto's Friends have also created a special Facebook page, where, in addition to the photo from inside the hospital, a photo of the girl before the attack is also published.
The goal of the fundraiser is to purchase a special device that will help Myrto with nutrition and communication. So far, $3,822 have been raised while $25,000 is required, i.e., about €18,600.
The battle Myrto is fighting at Spaulding Hospital in Boston is huge. But in her fight, she is not alone. Besides her parents, she also has the diaspora by her side.
Indeed, diaspora members and organizations of the Greek-American community have mobilized to help the Papadomichela family.
The girls from the diaspora came into contact with Myrto's mother, Mary Kotrotsou, and visited her in the hospital. «Her mind was functioning and she seemed to enjoy herself when she saw company», says Ms. Spyriodopoulou.
When it became clear that there were hopes for Myrto to return, discussions began about the special device. However, as the diaspora member Maria Spyriodopoulou recounts, her mother did not have the $25,000 that were required.
«The young diaspora women, however, took the initiative to inform the council, which voted unanimously to offer its assistance to purchase the machine. We started a campaign that will culminate on December 7 with an event in a church in Boston to raise funds. Greeks and Americans have become sensitized and are in contact with us», concluded Maria Spyridopoulou.
