Ikea's smart home products have long been the preferred choice for those who want to start or expand a smart home at an affordable price. The use of physical remote controls by the company has simplified the process for those who are new to technology.

However, when Ikea expanded its line of affordable Matter-over-Thread, many users, especially Apple Home users, reported problems. Complaints arose from frustrated users who were often unable to add the devices to their smart home networks. Ikea acknowledged the problem and said it was investigating the issue.
“We are aware that some customers are experiencing connection issues when setting up their devices in certain home environments and we take this very seriously. We have a dedicated team that examines the concerns that have been reported and works closely with our ecosystem partners and the Connectivity Standards Alliance to better understand the issues and improve the experience.“
This statement indicated a more fundamental problem with the Matter standard. Since its launch, it has become clear that Apple, Google, and Amazon are focusing on their own agendas. The spirit of collaboration that characterized the early development of the standard has diminished, leading to a competitive environment among the platforms.

Instead of being a plug-and-play solution for manufacturers, where a Matter device would work seamlessly on all platforms, manufacturers still bear the responsibility to ensure that their devices work correctly with each platform before release. This reflects the same challenges they faced before the introduction of Matter.
Jennifer Tuohy of The Verge experienced these issues firsthand and sought solutions. She found a video from A Smarter House that explored various proposed solutions, but concluded that there was no single solution. For Apple Home users, devices can lag during insertion and eventually time out. Reports suggest that repeated add/remove cycles can leave a residual state within the ecosystem, which can resolve after a delay.
When DIRIGERA is used as a bridge, newly added devices may not appear until both the node and the Apple border router devices are restarted. Matter had a goal, and it appears to be failing at it.

Even if the various smart home platforms prioritize growing their own user bases, it remains in their interest to resolve these issues. The simplicity of a unified standard is essential for smart home technology to become commonplace.
